Attributions of success or failure in marriage among married couples and separated individuals

The aim of the study is to find out the attributions that lead to marital success. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 married couples who are living together for at least 20 years. In addition, 15 separated individuals with no intentions of reconciling with their former spouses whom they live with for at least two years, have at least one child and living in Metro Manila also participated in the study. Data were analyzed qualitatively by lifting the verbatims from the responses which answered the research problems. Married husbands are perceived by their wives as responsible, expressive, and trustworthy. The married wives are perceived as responsible, expressive, and trustworthy. The common problems encountered by married couples are misunderstanding, infidelity, and finances. Problem solving strategies involves discussion, give and take, and humility. The present nature of the marital relations are friendship and brotherly or sisterly love. While the attributions that led to marital failure are also considered. Separated husbands are described as irresponsible, jealous, and not expressive one while separated wives are dominant, dishonest, and irresponsible. Problems encountered are irresponsibility, infidelity, and communication gap. The problem solving strategies of separated individuals are no discussion and confrontation. These are the attributions that led to failure in marriage.
