Summary: | A total of forty isolates of actinomycetes were obtained from soil and leaf samples within the DLSU campus. Of theses, 25 came from leaves and 15 came from soil. Isolation used the technique prescribed by Tunac (1993) with Glycerol Yeast Extract Agar (GYEA) as culture medium. Isolates were described in terms of cultural characteristics. Screening for antibacterial properties of the isolates was done using the Cross Streak method. Of the 25 isolates from leaves, 72 percent (18) inhibited Bacillus subtilis, 56 percent (14) inhibited Staphylococcus aureus, and 24 percent (6) inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Of the 15 isolates from the soil, 47 percent (7) inhibited S. aureus, 40 percent (6) inhibited B. subtilis, and 27 percent (4) inhibited P. aerugenosa. Of the 40 isolates, 60 percent (24) inhibited P. aeruginosa, 53 percent (21) inhibited S. aureus and 25 percent (10) inhibited P. aerugenosa. |
