Description
Summary:Sibling rivalry is a phenomenon that states that two siblings are each other's rival in life and that they are constantly competing with one another in order to be better than the other. In this study, 5 pairs of siblings were interviewed to see if they had rivalry between them and how it affected their lives, including how they resolve conflict. Data was then analyzed through thematic anaysis per sibling pair, then collectively through a cross-case analysis. Findings show that the factors that affected the pairs' relationships, including the development of sibling rivalry, include parental influence and their relationship with their sibling. Sibling rivalry (or lack thereof) also affected their sibling relationship, their relationship with their parents, and personality development, including career choice, among others. Finally, the sibling pairs resolved conflict through natural resolution, giving each other spaces for a while, and through verbal communication.
