Summary: | The paper has investigated the effect of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) game performance on the sponsoring companies' stock return. The study was composed of six teams from the PBA that are publicly-listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). The sample period of the study was from 2010 to 2015. Multiple regression models are employed where the effect of the game performance on stock return is analyzed by controlling variables such as the market index, the type of match (Philippine cup, commissioner's cup, governor's cup, regular season, and postseason), the beginning odds prior the game, the lag between the match date and the opening date and the market index return. The findings show that the game performance was insignificant with the stock returns of the six companies. However, for San Miguel Purefoods Company Incorporated and Petron Corporation, the game result and betting odds prior the game respectively, were found significant but with a very minimal effect to the stock return of the company. |
