The work had two phases: development (phase I) and evaluation (phase II) of the self-instructional modules on some basic ecological concepts. Phase I resulted in the production of the experimental edition of the seven (7) self-instructional modules (SIMs) which are: SIM 1. The Environment SIM 2. The Biotic Community SIM 3. Ecosystems SIM 4. Food Chains and Food Web SIM 5. Energy Flow of materials in the Ecosystem SIM 6 The Flow of Materials in the Ecosystem SIM 7. Ecological Relationships and Ecological Balance. Furthermore, a Teacher's Supplement was also developed to serve as the teacher's guide in the use of the modules. Phase II consisted of the following: a. Experimental try-out to assess the modules' effect on student achievement using the pre-post-test-control group design. b. Evaluation of the modules by some biology teachers with the use of the questionnaires which considers such points as clarity, specificity, functionality and relevance of the objectives, subject matter, design and learning activities, adaptability of the modules to varying capabilities and attitudes and the use of appropriate evaluation instrument. c) Evaluation of the modules by the students on the clarity and usefulness of the lessons as well as the module's ability to hold students' interest. d. Communication index determination for each of the SIMs using the Feedback-based Readability Formula. The experimental try-out was done at Central Mindanao University High School using random samples of 40 students for the control and 40 students for the experimental groups. The application of t-test for dependent samples to the gain scores of the control and experimental groups revealed that there was a significant gain in scores in both groups. The comparison of the control and experimental groups employing the t-test, revealed that the gain scores of the experimental group was significantly higher than those of the control.The evaluation of the modules by both the teachers and the students revealed that majority of them found the modules to possess the qualities necessary for an effective self-instructional material. The determination of the Student Involvement Index and the Communication Index revealed that the modules were all readable and comprehensible inquiry oriented self-instructional materials.
