Summary:Abstract. The study is an assessment of the water power available from the streamflow of the Dupagan River near the community of Gacab. This effort is in line with the College of Engineering's thrust of community assistance by providing electrical power through Micro-Hydro schemes in remote areas of the Abra region. Given the limited time of one year in developing such a scheme for the area, a hydrologic study involving the production of a flow duration curve (FDC) was pursued by the researchers. From the FDC, estimates of dependable power could be matched with the requirements of the community. The FDCs would also be used in the preparation of detailed design and layout of the Micro-Hydro scheme. The river being an ungauged one, posed difficulties in obtaining FDCs and so information based on characteristics of adjacent basins were utilized using their respective streamflow and rainfall records. Investigations indicate correlations of the three adjacent areas with their respective streamflow were found reliable to establish an FDC of the Gacab area. Results indicate that estimated streamflow values for the Dupagan River exceed a flowrate of 290 liters per second 80% of the time. This value was then taken as the minimum dependable flowrate in designing the Micro-Hydro power plant. The dependable power that may be supplied for the Micro-Hydro scheme is estimated at 17.24 kW, the minimum power at 5.25 kW, and the maximum power at 17.54 kW. A schedule of power availability and power distribution is also proposed for a typical year in the area.
