Summary: | The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), a clinical instrument that screens for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and other related cognitive disorders, is conceptually translated in Filipino. A committee composed of a linguist, social scientist, psychometrician, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse is formed to produce an equivalent translation of the NPI.
The translated instrument was reviewed by a committee of caregivers of dementia patients. A harmonization meeting was conducted between the two committees to integrate their translations. The translation process was documented. Several translation strategies and issues were identified and a new translation model was formulated. Pre-testing was done to increase understandability of the translated NPI among 50 potential caregivers. Psychometric properties were established by involving 120 caregivers of elderly (38 with possible dementia, 43 have at least one of the 12 symptoms and 39 were non-symptomatic). Criterion-related validity was used, wherein the results of the translated NPI were compared to the evaluation of a psychiatrist. Inter-rater and test-retest reliability indices were determined. Statistical equivalence, sensitivity and specificity were also investigated. The conceptually translated NPI was proven to be functionally equivalent, valid and to have high sensitivity and specificity. The translated NPI is a promising tool to screen for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and other cognitive disorders among the elderly. |
