Description
Summary:This thesis verifies the parameter optimization capability of fuzzy logic based algorithm on the real-time control of traffic signal. A fuzzy logic controller was developed for the control of an arterial traffic signal system consisting of three successive intersections with three-phase and four-phase traffic plan. Computer simulation was conducted to test and fine-tune the fuzzy logic controller. Testing and analysis was done by varying the traffic flow from non-congested to congested conditions. The performances of fuzzy logic controller in isolated mode and hybrid mode were compared using average delay per vehicle and link queue as criteria. Results show that the controller developed was able to adjust to the changing conditions of the traffic environment and optimizes the traffic signal parameters in both isolated and hybrid mode. The hardware integration of the fuzzy logic software in isolated mode to a miniature model of one intersection show that the fuzzy logic controller was adaptive to the changing traffic condition and effective in the real-time control of the traffic signal.
