Assessing the use of web-based computer assisted language learning (CALL) as an alternative approach in language teaching

This study was conducted to assess the use of Web-based CALL as an alternative approach in language teaching, specifically focusing on reading comprehension, listening comprehension and vocabulary development. This study utilized the quasi-experimental design. The research participants consisted of 68 female 1st year secretarial students enrolled at National College of Science & Technology for 2nd semester AY 2005-2006. The Web-based CALL group is composed of 33 students while the control group was composed of 35 students. The researcher handled the Web based CALL group while another teacher handled the traditional classroom-based group. The review of literature showed that there were many considerable research done on CALL which specifically focus on the four language skills. This study found that there were significant differences in listening comprehension and vocabulary development. Likewise, sentence completion which is a sub-skill in reading and paying attention to details, which is a sub-skill in listening, showed significant difference as well. Recommendations for future research were made, specifically the creation of a third group where the teaching of English will be a using the combined approach, the traditional classroom-based approach and Web-based CALL approach in order to determine if there would be any difference in the students performance.
