Description
Summary:This study describes analyzes physical violence behavior reported to occur in four middle schools in the central of Hochiminh, City - Vietnam. Survey questionnaires were administered to 376 middle school students, 150 school personnel and 100 parents. Additionally, 20 school personnel comprising 4 principals, 4 discipline teachers and 12 home room teachers were interviewed. The findings drawn from this study are the following: (1) the common forms of physical violence are pushing, punching, grabbing, scratching, followed by slapping and pulling hair; biting and stabbing rarely occur on campus; (2) physical violence frequently happens outside the school and on the school grounds than any other places; (3) all the students and self – reported victims, usually feel safe at school; school personnel believe that their school is usually safe and parents also perceive that their children are usually safe at school; (4) teachers and parent react to physical violence by talking with each other, advising the victim to get away from the perpetrator, and paying more attention to the students particularly the victim; (5) majority of students report that their administrators, teachers and parents try to prevent physical aggression before it occurs and always contact with each other to settle any problem. However, the findings also indicate that teacher – parents’ collaboration in dealing with physical violence is still lacking and at the present, schools have not yet had any anti – physical violence program to teach student and teachers how to deal and how to prevent physical violence. With regard to preventing physical violence in the school, students, school personnel and parents gave various suggestions on how to intervene and prevent physical fighting among middle school students.
