Lamp luminous flux measurement using integrating sphere for the Bureau of Product Standards Testing Center (BPSTC)

Light is probably one of the best gifts of God to mankind. With it, man never has to stumble in the dark. It allows him to see the world around him, the path he is taking and where it leads to. Light is probably one of the best gifts of God to mankind. With it, man never has to stumble in the dark. It allows him to see the world around him, the path he is taking and where it leads to. Light gives meaning to the sense of sight. Over time, light has become the subject of many studies –– how it behaves, how it can be generated, how it can be manipulated, how it is measured. With the extent of concerns about light, standardization turned out to be imperative. International organizations were created to promulgate and disseminate standards. Among these are the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), and the International Standards Organization (ISO). In the USA, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the primary documentary standards organization. The world over, standard light measurement is being practiced. This gave rise to the use of the integrating sphere, which this report tackles. Chapter I introduces the reader to the Bureau of Product Standards, and how it came to be. This shows what the organization is all about and what comprises it. One of the groups, the BPSTC is also presented. This chapter talks about the objectives and significance of the project. The practicum program is dealt with in Chapter II. Here, the different activities that brought the project to its realization were discussed. A schedule of activities was tabulated, with the corresponding duration. The challenges encountered working on the project were accounted for, as well as the solutions employed. Moreover, the lessons learned along the way were mentioned. Chapter III discusses in length the practicum project. The first part explains the tests being conducted on a variety of lamp types, as part of the certification scheme being implemented by BPS. The reason for coming out with the project was demonstrated. Inasmuch as the use of the integrating sphere for radiometric and photometric measurements is an established practice specified by international standards bodies, no new concept was presented. However, topics like The Principles of Light, the science of Photometry and Radiometry, and the Principles of Integrating Sphere were provided. These subjects were included to better appreciate the ideas governing the sphere. Chapter III also takes a look at the integrating sphere for specific use of BPSTC. The product specifications, operation and panel keys, together with the description, as provided in the product manual, were contained in this part of the report. The System Design gives the trainee’s concept of the project. A short narrative details the block diagram of the system, while the wiring diagram incorporates the electrical connection, components, and devices used. The last part of the chapter is more of a procedural in nature. An assessment of the project, as well as few recommendations, ends the report. 2003-11-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/6898 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Lamps—Standards—Philippines Lamps —Testing Electrical and Electronics
