Summary: | This study assesses the supervisory practices of the secondary school principals in the six diocesan schools of Southern Bukidnon based on the perceptions of the teachers and principals themselves. The descriptive normative method was used in the study. It described the profile, trends and patterns of the population and their performance done in the context of a natural situation. It also determined the relationship between or among variables correlated such as the actual and ideal supervisory practices, age, college units earned, teaching experience, and experience as principal. The main instrument used to gather the data was a survey questionnaire adapted from Ulanimo (1981). The total population of this study was 119, 6 female principals and 113 teachers employed in the six diocesan school of Southern Bukidnon during the school year 1985 to 1986. The 119 respondents were distributed as follows: 16 from Stella Matutina School 14 from Santo Nino High School 29 from Loyola High School 26 from San Andres High School 27 from Nuestra Senora del Pilar High School and 7 from Our Lady of Fatima High School. However, out of 119 respondents only 103 (86.55 percent) responses were finally gathered.
On the basis of the qualifications for principalship set up by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, most of the principals were not qualified. Therefore they need more training to strengthen their qualifications and enrich their knowledge. Generally, the t-test for correlated and independent samples revealed that faculty meetings and workshops/seminars were the supervisory practices that were frequently performed by the principals. On the other hand, Classroom Observation was the supervisory practice least performed or done by the principals. Moreover, Evaluation of Teachers was the supervisory practice that had the highest obtained t-value. The results therefore indicated that there is a need for the principals to modify their practices in conducting classroom observations and evaluation of teachers. On the basis of the multiple correlation through stepwise regression analysis, the findings revealed that there is a positive low relationship between the principals' supervisory performance and the combined effects of age, college units earned and teaching experience. However, it was found to be insignificant. Hence, the combined effects of age, college units earned and teaching experience could not effectively predict the principals' supervisory performance. |
