Description
Summary:This study establishes the career maturity profile, as measured by the Career Exploratory Inventory, of the first and fourth year high school students of the Don Bosco Technical Institutes in the Philippines, schoolyear 1988-89 and some correlates of career maturity, using the CEI Survey designed by Santamaria (1980). The study employed the descriptive-normative-correlational survey method of research to provide information on the demographic features and status of the population on career maturity and to understand the features under study in the context of a reference group. This study made use of correlations to estimate the extent to which different variables were related to career maturity in the given population. The subjects for this study were high school freshmen and senior students from the five Don Bosco Technical Institutes in the Philippines: DBTC-Mandaluyong, DBTI-Makati, DBTI-Tarlac, DBTI-Victorias, DBTI-Cebu and freshmen students from five selected equivalent schools paired respectively with the five DBTI: Lourdes School-Mandaluyong, San Beda College (High School Department)-Manila, La Salle Integrated School-Bacolod City, University of San Carlos (Boys High School)-Cebu City and Chevalier School (Angeles City). Subjects were selected by simple random sampling technique. Actual number of respondents were 716 freshmen and 624 fourth year high school students of DBTI and 711 freshmen students from the selected schools. The study made use of two research instruments: the Career Exploration Inventory (CEI) and the CEI survey questionnaire by Santamaria (1980). The findings of the study revealed that a number of students were quite low in their career maturity. They lacked the necessary attitudes and skills in making career decisions. These findings may very well explain the fact that many of the fourth year high school students leave their school without definite career plans to pursue resulting to much educational and vocational floundering in college. Nevertheless, the performance of Bosconians in the CEI were much better when compared with groups of students from other schools, meaning to say the Bosconians manifested more career competencies and better career attitudes than other groups of students. The type of curriculum offered by Don Bosco Technical Institutes seems to call for more career mature students and the technical program enhances further the students' career maturity as they go through their technical training in high school.
