In vitro screening of some algal species in St. Paul's Bay, Palawan for antimicrobial activity

Twelve species of algae collected from St. Paul's Bay, Palawan, were tested for the presence of antimicrobial activity using the paper disc agar diffusion method. The seaweed species studied belong to class Phaeophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Rhodophyceae. Ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane and ether e...

Cecilia G. Twelve species of algae collected from St. Paul's Bay, Palawan, were tested for the presence of antimicrobial activity using the paper disc agar diffusion method. The seaweed species studied belong to class Phaeophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Rhodophyceae. Ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane and ether extracts of the algae were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhosa, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. Results showed that the ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts of Laurencia papillosa exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The remaining algal extracts did not inhibit the growth of any of the test microorganisms. Further phytochemical study to identify and isolate the active components of L. papillosa and toxicity testing of the extract are recommended. 1992-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1450 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Marine algae -- Microbiology Anti-microbial agents St Paul's Bay Palawan Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology Marine Biology Microbial Physiology Organismal Biological Physiology
