Summary: | Extracts from barks and seeds of ten common fruit trees in the Philippines namely, Annona squamosa L. (atis), Annona muricata L. (guyabano), Chrysophyllum cainito L. (kaymito), Anacardium occidentale L. (kasoy), Manqifera indica L. (manga), Spondias purpurea L. (siniguelas), Pouteria campechiana (H.B.K.) Baehni (tiessa), Syzyqium cumini (L.) Skeels (duhat), Citrus mitis blco. (kalamansi) and Tamarindus indica L. (sampaloc) were tested for the presence of antimicrobial activities. The solvent used for extraction were acetone, ethanol (95 percent), ethyl acetate, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and distilled water. The different extracts were tested against six species of microorganisms, namely: Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shiqella dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Candida albicans.All the bark samples showed antimicrobial activities, while eight out of ten seed samples showed antimicrobial activities. Ethanol (95 percent), acetone and distilled water were effective solvent extractors of the antimicrobial components of the tested plant parts. |
