Summary:This study checks whether a significant difference exists in the self-image, emotional and social adjustment of hearing-impaired children who are educated through oral communication method and total communication method. The participants were 36 deaf children and 16 teachers from 5 schools for the deaf in Metro Manila. The Meadow-Kendall Social Emotional Adjustment Inventory (SEAI) instrument was used. This observation checklist was completed by two significant persons for each of the deaf child (i.e., either 2 teachers or a counselor and a teacher who knew the children well). T-test was employed to find any significant difference between the scores of oral and total communication groups. Self-image in both groups was average while emotional adjustment was below average. The findings revealed that no significant difference existed between self-image and emotional adjustment of the hearing-impaired children who were educated through oral and total communication method. It was in the social adjustment of the two groups wherein a significant difference was noted. The oral communicators were found to possess better social adjustment than the total communicators. It is recommended that counselors be fluent in both. methods of communication because the key competency for counseling lies in the ability of the counselor to establish effective communicative relationship with every type of deaf children. They also need to formulate programs that will enhance the social adjustment of children who are educated through total the communication method.
