Description
Summary:This study was undertaken to evaluate the MTAP Prepared materials as to its effect on the Mathematics achievement of the First Year slow learners of the Division of City Schools, Manila for the school year 1996-1997.The study utilized two hundred forty six students with 122 students composing the experimental group and 124 students for the control group. These students were taken from the five schools which are the low achieving schools in Manila. To ensure that these students were really slow learners, their ages and grade VI grades in Math were considered. The experimental groups used the MTAP Prepared materials while the control groups did not use the materials. The quantitative evaluation used the results of the pretest and posttest of the experimental and the control groups as well as the responses of student-evaluators and the teacher-evaluators on the Likert-scale questionnaire. The statistical measures used in the treatment of data were the t-test for dependent and independent samples and the analysis of variance. Results of the statistical tests led to the following findings and conclusions:1. There is a significant difference between the posttest and pretest mean scores of the experimental and control groups. They got much higher means in the posttest than in the pretest. Based on the students' improved performance, the study showed that the MTAP Prepared Materials is an effective tool in learning as well as the traditional approach, using the chalk-talk method of teaching.2. Although the posttest mean scores of the experimental groups exceeded the mean scores of the control groups in all the five schools, there is no significant difference between the mean rating of the experimental groups and control groups in Osmena, Recto and Quirino High Schools. This implies that the use of the MTAP Prepared materials is as effective as not using the materials in those schools.3. There is a significant difference between the posttest mean scores of the experimental groups and the control groups in Soliman and Villamor High Schools in favor of the experimental groups. This reveals that the MTAP Prepared Materials is an effective learning tool in the two schools.4. There is a significant difference in the posttest mean scores of the experimental groups, hence, among the five schools used in the study, one school or two performed better than the other. The evaluation of the prepared materials showed that majority of the teacher-respondents as well as student-respondents had favorable responses concerning the content, clarity, format, usefulness and approach of the materials. Likewise, the student-respondents stated that Mathematics does not scare them anymore after going thru the materials.
