The chloroform extract of Gliricidia sepium afforded a new oxetane derivative whose structure was elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Cassia alata leaves afforded 1,8-dihydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl-anthraquinone. Its structure was elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR, IR and UV spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. It was found active against Bacillus subtilis with an activity index of 1.8 which is higher than the standard antibiotic chloramphenicol. It reduced the number of micronucleated polychromatic etythrocytes induced by Mitomycin C by 71 percent.
