A correlational study: Memory span and profile of students with mild mental retardation

This study investigates the memory span and its relationship with type of school, sex, chronological age, mental age, class level, socio-economic status, and length of stay in school of students with mild mental retardation.There were 43 respondents, 22 from private and 21 from public school. The instrument used in the study was the Knox Cube Test, a standardized test. The data were subjected to chi-square test. Likewise for the profile of variables, frequency distribution and percentage were used.The results showed that there was a significant relationship of memory span with the type of school, sex, chronological age, mental age, class level, socio-economic status, and length of stay in school.On the basis of the results, it was concluded that, the null hypothesis that memory span of respondents with mild mental retardation is not related with type of school, sex, chronological age, mental age, class level, socio-economic status, and length of stay in school is rejected. On the other hand, type of school, sex, chronological age, mental age, class level, socio-economic status, and length of stay in school has correlation with memory span of respondents with mild mental retardation. Recommendations are given based on the results of the study: (1) That a program be developed to improve the memory span of students with mild mental retardation in both public and private schools (2) That a sequel to this research be made using particular variables or the same variables to establish more data base locally (3) That the same study can be repeated in the home country of the researcher (Taiwan) for the purposes of comparison (4) That the profiles considered in the study be used as springboard for classification of special students in classroom settings (5) That adjustments in learning activities of special population with mild mental retardation be considered based on the memory span and variables in the study (6) That assessment of memory span be made per child before placement.
