| Summary: | The study assesses the speech styles of siblings of children with mental retardation of P. Burgos Elementary School, Manila to serve as basis for a home language intervention program. It employed descriptive survey method and utilized a researcher-made questionnaire and unstructured interview. Questionnaires were distributed to siblings of children with mental retardation aged nine and above.
Results of the study revealed that siblings of children with mental retardation were mostly female, of school age and studying. They also have other relatives living with them. The common contents of the speech of these children are friends, relatives, toys, family gatherings, games, school work, feelings about siblings with mental retardation and fears and plans about the future. Concerns relative to their siblings with mental retardation are discussed freely and openly only some times. These are likewise discussed with reservations with friends and family members. The study, likewise, revealed the weaknesses in the speech styles of siblings of children with mental retardation. They could not freely and openly talk about thoughts, feelings and concerns about their siblings with mental retardation. |
