Summary: | This paper addressed the challenge of providing high-quality Chinese teaching and stable teacher resources in Manila's Chinese schools. Using a mixed-method sequential explanatory research design, the study investigated motivating factors, challenges, benefits, and support experienced by Chinese teachers in Metro Manila. Quantitative data from a survey of fifty-two respondents were subjected to descriptive analysis, independent samples t-test, and ANOVA. Qualitative data from interviews with eight teachers were thematically analyzed.
The findings revealed significant factors influencing Chinese teachers' choice to teach in Metro Manila, including a desire for global exploration, better pay, professional development opportunities, and an English-speaking environment. Challenges encompassed limited language proficiency, cultural differences, and classroom management skills. Benefits included new instructional methods, expanded worldview, cross-cultural awareness, and improved language proficiency. The study's findings may have limited generalizability due to the relatively small sample size and focus on Chinese teachers in Metro Manila, possibly not fully representing experiences of teachers in other locations or language educators in different contexts. Implications extended to school leaders seeking Chinese teachers, providing insights into motivating factors, challenges, benefits, and support. The study advanced Chinese language education in Metro Manila and refined recruitment and retention strategies for Chinese teachers in international contexts.
In summary, this study enhanced our understanding of Chinese language education in Metro Manila, supporting Chinese teachers planning to teach in the region. It informed recruitment and retention efforts for Chinese teachers in international educational settings.
