Summary: | The purpose of this paper is to showcase ensuring business continuity by the creation and implementation of a succession plan package in the Sagles Family Apartment Rental Business through the use of an insider action research methodology, adherent to the standards of Coghlan. This study utilizes the insider action research methodology espoused by Coghlan and Lewin’s change management framework. Undergoing what I frame as general and specific action research cycles, I use various data gathering, reflective, and other encouraged action research tools (first, second, and third-person inquiry frameworks described further in the paper) so that the perspectives of key collaborators are documented. The conceptual framework of true succession of Lucky, Minai, and Isaiah taught me and my collaborators as to how the three critical factors (predecessor, successor and environment) affect business continuity. In this action research, we used the second case of the interaction between the predecessor and successor. I lead my team in creating a succession plan package for approval of our clan representatives and also the planning of the successors’ grooming phase. The family business succession plan of Grant Walsh of the KPMG Enterprise Centre for Family Business gave us a guide to create a succession plan package using management succession and ownership succession activities. As a conclusion, I have improved the conceptual framework of Lucky, Minai, and Isaiah by including time and communication as additional essential factors for business continuity. This study contributes scholarly and practical value for family businesses and small enterprises. This research is narrowed within the context of a small leasing company situated in the Philippines. |
