| Summary: | The Flaship Species Fund (henceforth "the Fund") provides practical support for the conservation of endangered species and their habitats in developing countries, focusing on so-called "flagship species". Launched in 2001, the fund is a joint initiative between Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and the UK Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The Fund carefully selects species whose protection will act to conserve other species using the same habitats. Species groups are selected because: 1). they are highly threatened; 2). they include species with cultural importance at a national level; 3). they have important ecological roles; and 4). can be considered effective ecological 'umbrellas' for border biodiversity. The species are selected from countries with limited resources to devote to wildlife conservation. |
