Teaching Beyond Resilience: Pedagogies for Critical Global Citizenship in the Philippines

Citizenship curricula in Asian societies often reflect aspirations toward societal or global transformation; however, historical legacies and contemporary influences create discursive contexts that mitigate critical perspectives necessary for instigating change. This chapter focuses on resilience as a neoliberal construct in Asian curricula that counters global citizenship education’s transformative mission. It highlights case studies from the Philippines to discuss ways that educators and schools have attempted to cultivate critical and subversive pedagogies, and discusses the need for global citizenship education (GCE) research and practice focused on critical approaches that envision alternative futures for global citizenship.
