The role of leucine-rich alpha-2 glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) in diabetes-related ischaemic heart diseases
Ischaemic heart diseases (IHDs) is the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Effective revascularization in IHDs remains challenging given the growing magnitude and complexity of the disease. Lately, therapeutic angiogenesis using growth factors to promote perfusion of the ischemic ti...

Effective revascularization in IHDs remains challenging given the growing magnitude and complexity of the disease. Lately, therapeutic angiogenesis using growth factors to promote perfusion of the ischemic tissues emerged as an attractive alternative. We hypothesis that Leucine-rich α-2- glycoprotein 1 (LRG1), a novel angiogenic factor involved in ocular neovascularization, could be employed as a novel pro-angiogenic candidate. Given that, diabetes is a common comorbidity that contributes to treatment failure, we aim to study the functional role of LRG1 in cardiac angiogenesis under diabetic conditions. Collectively, our data suggest functional importance and phenotypic difference of LRG1 in mediating physiological and diabetic cardiac angiogenesis. The molecular and signalling information extracted from cultured ECs provided new insights to LRG1-regulated TGFβ signalling, which may facilitate the development of more effective treatment strategies to treat diabetes-associated IHDs.
