Summary:Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a technique in which low level electrical impulses are applied through electrodes to nerves or muscles in order to restore the lost functions in patients with neuromuscular disorders or Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Commercial FES systems are currently being evaluated for limited control of hand functions, bladder emptying, breathing and walking. The fineness of operation offered by the best among these devices leaves a great deal to be desired. One of the major problems in present FES systems that restrict their use as an ideal means for restoring lost functions is the 'crude control of limb movement'.
