Although the traditional Chinese School became history, the traditional beliefs and essence of the Chinese School have not disappeared. However, how do the schools in Singapore contributes to the continuation of the traditional Chinese culture has become a topic of concern for the Chinese community. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how Xingnan as a neighbourhood school continues to contribute to the mission of continuing traditional Chinese culture under the premise of catering to the government’s education system. Thus, breaking the stereotype that only Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools need to take on the responsibility for the continuation of traditional Chinese culture. Xingnan Primary School was initially a traditional Chinese School started up by the Chinese community. It has always placed great emphasis on the continuation of Chinese culture. After becoming the W3 Centre of Learning for Chinese Language and Culture, it continues to offer its student body an array of Chinese cultural related activities up to this date,。This aim to stimulate students’ interest in Chinese culture and promote students’ learning of the mother tongue language. Such activities include the building of Hua Cui Xuan which aims to continue the traditions of Tang Dynasty Village. Chinese cultural elements are also added in the Chinese curriculum, such as the Qian Ju Wen Approach and the creation of auxiliary materials by the Chinese department. Furthermore, the school also immersed the students with Chinese culture outside of classroom learning by organising events such as the Mother Tongue Fortnight and Mother Tongue EXCITE Week. These activities are kept in line with the Ministry of Education (MOE) syllabus, to promote Chinese culture within the school and beyond, which contribute to the mission of continuing traditional Chinese culture.
