The novel is divided into two parts, narrating about the family saga of the Leong's and their destinies revolving around the development of Cantonese opera in Singapore and a set of opera costume. The novel spanning eight decades and three generations also runs through major historical events of Singapore. Grandfather, Leong Ping Hung came to Singapore from Guangdong, China, in the 1910s. He spoke Cantonese (a form of dialect) as his mother tongue. Hence various dialogues were carried out in the dialect instead of Mandarin. In 2019, Singapore writer Jeremy Tiang translated the novel into English, Costume. Translations by Jeremy Tiang have won favours of many western readers because his work allowed readers to look at the various cultures of the country from the perspective of the natives. The study of the literary translation of Singapore Chinese-English translation work is a subject that has received less attention in academics. This paper hopes to find out more about the Singapore Chinese-English literary translation by analyzing the skopos and translation technique of Jeremy Tiang's Costume. This paper will attempt to uncover the Skopos behind Jeremy Tiang's Costume. By comparing the source and target text, this paper also aims to investigate how the translator makes use of the foreignisation technique and Singlish phrases to translate phrases that are uniquely Singapore, to showcase Singapore's unique multilingualism.
