Mulan is a popular research topic in the Chinese academia. Since ancient times, Mulan has repeatedly captured the interest of many literati, dramatists and film workers. In their own unique angle, each of them shed light on the story through different perspectives and established Mulan as a symbol for Loyalty, Filial Piety and Feminism. In this research paper, the author analyses the different remake of Mulan in various texts. She also explores how its theme gradually shifted from traditional discourse of Confucian principles to modern-day’s Feminism. Through such observations, the author then aims to reveal the topic of Female Gender Identity in Mulan’s stories, and explore how female gender roles have been defined and shaped by society’s beliefs over the years. Subsequently, the author seeks to dissect the symbolic meaning(s) and cultural value(s) represented by Mulan. |
