Since ancient times, there has been a deep-rooted phenomenon of male dominant society throughout the world. Women in patriarchalism are constantly undergoing oppression and slander by language, law, society, family, ideology, etc. Women are regarded as ‘living things’ for the seek of men’s existence, and as ‘tools’ that can only reproduce. Their self-esteem is ruined and their status is degraded, but this situation has become what everyone calls for granted. Singapore has been moving towards a modern society with economic development, but there is still a certain conservative and traditional mentality in terms of the nation’s thinking. Nevertheless, after World War II in 1945, many Singaporean women gradually became feminist due to their political awareness of the current situation. Since the country’s independence, Singaporean women have established their own autonomy, and gender-related taboos have gradually faded over time. Many topics about women's autonomy have also made further developments and breakthroughs in education, art, literature, media, law, etc.
This report paper will look into several Singapore chinese theatre scripts on female subjects to explore how Singaporean theaters challenge some sensitive female topics that most people avoid, and use women as the main protagonist to magnify and criticize the cruel treatment experienced by women in a patriarchal society. So as to dominate the resistance of gender stereotypes over the years and speak for the women. |
