Summary: | This dissertation provides a historical analysis of the Aceh conflict through the theoretical lens of Andre Beaufre 's concept of direct and indirect strategies. It shows that the Suharto Government adopted a direct strategy, while the B.J. Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri Governments that followed attempted to apply some form of indirect strategy but did not succeed due to a combination of factors including the absence of political will, lack of support from key interest groups such as the Indonesian military, and unfavourable circumstances on the ground. |
