Description
Summary:Tower cranes are a common sight nowadays, especially in large-scale construction projects like a whole estate area or the further development of Marina Bay in 2010-2015 where Marina Bay Sands and the Supertrees were some of the structures completed. However, one of their disadvantages is the safety involved in their operations, with multiple hazards present in the process. In the process of creating a safer environment for tower crane operations, many developments have been made in the robotics and virtual reality industry that can be applied to tower cranes. A tower crane simulator program has been developed in NTU which is able to plan tower crane movements and lifting paths for the best efficiency and safety for the particular situation. This report presents the approaches taken by the author in producing models for use in the tower crane simulator program, including a product family design approach. It also explores the safety of tower crane operations as well as the potential use of virtual reality in the future operations.
