An increasing number of independent activists, mainly young Singaporeans, have been taking to social media to encourage discussions on the issue of race relations in Singapore. This project will explore this indicator of a newfound willingness to publicly broach the prickly topic of race that was once viewed as taboo. This is a fairly new phenomenon. As recently as 2016, a joint survey by Channel NewsAsia and the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) highlighted that Singapore residents were wary of discussing issues about race, citing reasons such as creating unnecessary tension or causing offence. While addressing the issue of race remains a divisive topic, this feature attempts to shed light on how online platforms such as Minority Voices and other efforts through various mediums are attempting to bring about constructive change to the racial discourse in Singapore.
