In search of Taiwan's cultural subjectivity from the perspective of Taiwan's food culture

Taiwan’s history of colonization resulted in a plural society and the Taiwanese ambiguity over their cultural roots. With increasing globalization, culture “homogenization” has become more real in the 21st century. China’s claim of sovereignty over Taiwan and the closely intertwined cultural binds between the mainland and the island further deepened the Taiwanese’s dilemma regarding their national and cultural identity. This eventually led to a question that became controversial within Taiwan: Does Taiwan possess a dominant cultural subjectivity to strengthen Taiwanese’s national identity and also serve as a means of soft power to proclaim its existence? This analysis views Taiwan’s cultural subjectivity through Taiwan’s food culture. The theme focuses on how the local “xiao chi” (local light dishes) reflects Taiwan’s cultural subjectivity. This analysis will also show that Taiwan “xiao chi”, in conjunction with Taiwan “night market”, have created a common “cultural living environment”, a space which not only serves a communal function but is also a basis for collective memory.
