Summary: | The issue of divorce seems to strike a chord in the Singapore Malay community. The rate of divorce amongst the Malays has increased by 28.6% from 1015 in 1997 to 1305 in 2007. However, despite the rise in divorce rates, marriage between divorcees and divorcees make up 16% of the total marriages registered for that year under the Muslim Law Act. Despite the pronounced issue of divorce and remarriage, there is limited literature that delves into this matter in Singapore, much less so in the Malay community. Hence, this study aims to explore the factors that influence a divorcee‟s decision to remarry or to remain single. Nine Malay respondents between the ages 30 to 55 were interviewed, all of whom had gone through divorce at least once. Five respondents remarried while another four remained single. Their experiences were recorded and subsequently analysed to find themes to be used as bases for comparison. |
