It has increased by a staggering 20% in the previous ten years. Food waste management is critical and failure to decrease food waste can be costly for a variety of reasons. Garbage in Singapore is disposed of in incinerator facilities or at the Pulau Semakau landfill. Food waste discharged in incineration facilities contributes to the acceleration of global warming by accounting for 8% of worldwide greenhouse emissions. Furthermore, being a land-scarce city, Singapore has the issue of a landfill that is rapidly running out of capacity. Most of this waste was produced because of Singaporeans' poor food storage, purchasing, and food handling practices. Despite government efforts to educate the public and develop a plan, as well as many others who are fighting this grand issue together with us, there is still 665 million tonnes of food waste in 2020. The monetary worth of all these wasted foods is estimated to be over hundred million of dollar. I will be creating an app to target this everlasting problem, in hopes that food wastage in Singapore will be greatly reduced. A survey of a population sample size n=80 participants and F&B workers was conducted to measure their attitudes towards the efforts of F&B owners to reduce food waste which will be shown in chapter 2.
