The thesis consists of 4 chapters. First chapter surveys historical development of Liyuanxi and reviews previous scholarly works on the Liyuanxi performance. Based on the previous academic achievement, chapter two detailed artistic movement of Liyuanxi in relation to stage effect and space utilization. Chapter three discusses Liyuanxi stage performance and how the opera actor and audience communicate with each other under the mechanism of action space, perceptual space, aesthetic space and intercourse space that which are separately composed by actors, audiences, characters and “participators”. The last chapter discusses the current development of Liyuanxi and suggests ways to promote traditional opera and to increase public awareness of the beauty of the traditional drama. |
