A study on Chinese lyrical fictions in Mainland China in the 1980s

Lyrical fiction is a sub-genre of fictions which combines the characteristics of fiction and lyric poetry. Its narrative impetus lies in the expression of the subject's emotions. The surge of lyrical fictions was a typical literary phenomenon in Mainland China in the 1980s mostly because humanitarianism was the dominant ideology at that time, which was beneficial for individuals to express their feelings and emotions to the utmost. Based on close reading of some representative lyrical fictions, this thesis is trying to interpret them historically and contextually. On this basis, it will further speculate on the relationship and tension between modernity and tradition, individual and collectivity, literature and ideology. This thesis mainly analyzes seven representative writers and discusses four topics related to lyrical fictions in categories. Firstly, by taking Wang Zengqi (汪曾祺) and He Liwei (何立伟) as examples, this thesis discusses the conversion and inheritance of classical lyrical tradition in the new era. Besides, Zhang Chengzhi (张承志) and Deng Gang (邓刚)’s works explicitly show the reconstruction of the subject of the young generation, which aroused social concern at that time. Furthermore, Su Tong (苏童) and Lü Xin (吕新)’s work can exemplify the special lyricism of avant-garde fictions. In the last part, it discusses Chi Zijian (迟子建)’s lyrical fictions. Unlike the other writers mentioned above, the lyricism in her fictions depends mostly on the divineness of nature and ecological holism. Through these discussions, this thesis hopes to better explore the richness and complexity of lyrical fictions and comprehend the ideology and culture in Mainland China in the 1980s. |
