| Summary: | Capacity planning of a port is very important as port plays a key role in international trade. Long-term capacity planning of a port ensures that it has the ability to cater to the future demand and hence boost the economic development of a nation.
The paper analyses the various components involved when planning for long-term capacity and their inter-relationships. Demand forecasting, supply of required capacity, their intricate relationship with port services pricing and port ownership structures as well as the impact of inter-port competitiveness and port congestion on capacity planning are be covered in the paper.
The paper also studies the methods for capacity improvements such as enhancing inter-modal freight transportation, port transportation network and through land reclamation. Case studies on Ports of Singapore, Tanjung Pelapas and Hong Kong are used to illustrate the concept. |
