Demand forecasting, supply of required capacity, their intricate relationship with port services pricing and port ownership structures as well as the impact of inter-port competitiveness and port congestion on capacity planning are be covered in the paper. The paper also studies the methods for capacity improvements such as enhancing inter-modal freight transportation, port transportation network and through land reclamation. Case studies on Ports of Singapore, Tanjung Pelapas and Hong Kong are used to illustrate the concept.
