Description
The qipao or cheongsam has a rich history and cultural significance, thus it has been an iconic dress style in Singapore for many years. However, the qipao has become a rare sight on the streets. Today, the qipao is typically reserved for special occasions that celebrate Chinese culture and ethnicity, and is primarily worn by Singaporean Chinese women. Therefore, the qipao has become a performance of Chineseness, a ubiquitous symbol of Chinese culture and an identity marker for Singaporean Chinese women. As such, this paper seeks to address the qipao’s evolution into a generic marker of Chinese/Singaporean female identity by providing a detailed review of the garment’s trend in Singapore, and exploring the complex interplay between Singapore’s fashion, culture, and society throughout the different eras. This paper aims to shed light on the qipao’s significance in Singaporean history and culture, and to deepen our understanding of how fashion and dress reflect and shape social and cultural identities. Keywords: Singaporean Chinese Female Identity, Cheongsam, Qipao, Chineseness, Singapore Fashion Culture
