Summary: | The focus of this project is to design and develop stretchable optical waveguides for soft robotic applications. The project involves using CAD software to design parts and molds, and then prototyping, casting, and testing the waveguides. Different materials are being researched and tested for their optical properties, with material characterization and tensile testing also being performed. The results of the experiment suggest that different materials have varying suitability for different applications, with the degree of optical loss varying depending on the type of stretching or bending applied. One of the main limitations of the project is the limited selection of materials available for the mold, due to the use of a commercial polyjet printer. To address this limitation, a release agent and FEP plastic films were used to ensure a repeatable and scalable waveguide fabrication process.
This project has the potential to contribute to the development of soft robotics, with stretchable optical waveguides having potential use in various applications. |
