Traffic control at smart road intersections

This paper discusses the challenges and issues faced in traffic control systems, specifically in intersections and the impact on autonomous vehicles. The traditional traffic control system, which uses fixed traffic signal timings, is inefficient and leads to traffic delays, excessive fuel usage and...

The traditional traffic control system, which uses fixed traffic signal timings, is inefficient and leads to traffic delays, excessive fuel usage and emissions. Intersection ‘right of way’ can be optimised to prevent vehicles from ceasing to move entirely. Deadlocks, in particular, pose as another significant challenge in traffic control systems. The paper proposes a traffic network system that incorporates communication between the network and the vehicles, reservation-occupancy constraints instead of traffic lights, better intersection usage and resolves deadlocks by calculating the alternate best possible path for vehicles. The paper also presents a literature review of traffic light management algorithms and wireless communication-based traffic management systems, and their limitations. The proposed traffic network system provides a scalable and expandable solution to traffic control while assuring real-time applications to autonomous vehicles.
