Citizenship education was included in Singapore's formal education system before independence. As an educational medium, citizenship textbooks effectively promote citizenship education through their content and teaching methods, serving as a channel to instil and promote citizenship awareness to students. This paper aims to explore the images of a “Good Citizenship” that was being constructed in Early Chinese textbooks during three different time periods: Pre-independence, early years of the nation’s independence, and post-independence. It further delves into an in-depth analysis of the reasons for educating students about the elements of a “Good Citizen” presented in these textbooks and their impact on students. Using the concept of text analysis, this paper will analyze the contents and pictorial illustrations of the Early Chinese textbooks from different periods. The paper will conclude by highlighting the evolution of “Good Citizenship” and unveiling the educational concepts and the national governance policy behind those images presented.
