The metaphor of "Mother and Wanderer": re-examining the relationship between China and overseas Chinese

In numerous past studies, the relationship between China and overseas Chinese has often been simplified into the metaphor of 'mother and child', portraying China as a caring mother and overseas Chinese as dependent children. However, while this description captures certain emotional ties between the two parties to some extent, it often obscures the complexity and diversity of the relationship. In fact, the relationship between China and overseas Chinese is far from being singular or static; rather, it has undergone changes and is filled with dynamism and diversity. Therefore, it is insufficient to simply assume an enduring and intimate bond between China and overseas Chinese based solely on this metaphor. Hence, this paper aims to comprehensively and deeply explore the complex and multi-dimensional relationship between China and overseas Chinese before 1949, and critically reevaluate this traditional metaphor. Through a multidimensional perspective on the relationship between China and overseas Chinese, as well as a review and analysis of historical documents, this paper seeks to dismantle the oversimplified view presented by the traditional 'mother and child' metaphor, revealing the complexity and dynamism of the relationship between the two parties. |
