Food, as a cultural symbol, can be easily circulated and can easily transcend languages, regions as well as ethnic groups. As such, with food from China containing many connotations and continuations of China’s culture, promoting China’s food culture can help to enhance China’s soft power. In recent years, China’s food culture began to spread and develop in Singapore, greatly affecting the eating habits of Singaporeans. As Singaporeans began to favour China’s food culture and habits, their impression of China has also taken a positive turn. This article will use the concept of soft power to explore the diffusion and development of China’s food culture in Singapore, explore its value and function as a cultural symbol, as well as discuss the hidden political significance behind this phenomenon.
