The image of “Nanyang” has been widely portrayed in the works of Modern Chinese Literature, where many Chinese writers write from their experience during their time in Nanyang, depicting the society and scenery. One such writer would be Hong Ling Fei, he originally participated in the Left-Wing Revolution, and he escaped to Singapore after the Shanghai Massacre as he was persecuted by the Kuomintang government. He started to embark on an escape from China, and he also wrote literary works documenting his time in Nanyang. His works feature many natural sceneries of Nanyang, where he also reflected on Nanyang society during the colonial period. His works provided an insight into the working and lower class of the Nanyang society, where they were exploited by Western Capitalism and colonizers. This paper seeks to dissect the elements of Natural scenery in Nanyang, through the lens of a revolutionist of Nanyang during colonial period in Hong Ling Fei works.
