Apart from English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, Singlish is regarded as the fifth official language by locals. Singlish came into being in the 1970s under the collision of many languages, and with the development of time, it has become a tool of communication. However, in 2000, the Singapore government launched the Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) to curb the development of Singlish, believing that Singaporeans can better communicate with the outside world only by speaking Standard English. Even so, Singlish is still widely used by locals. In recent years, especially during the epidemic, the trend in Singlish struck again. Singlish has emerged in different media and even appeared on international platforms. The debate about the use of Singlish has become even more intense as well. Many locals believe that it can constitute Singapore's national identity as it represents Singapore's cultural identity. Singaporeans are aware of the importance of Singlish to Singapore and believe that it should be vigorously promoted rather than hidden. As Singlish is an identity symbol of Singapore, it is important to make people understand it. Translation of Singlish is a subject that has not been thoroughly researched. This paper intends to study the importance of translating Singlish and explore the possibility of it reflecting Singapore's culture and identity. This paper will first study how Singlish constitutes the identity of Singaporeans and discuss Singlish's translation strategies. Finally, this paper hopes to use Skopos theory as a basis to explore how to translate Singlish to achieve the purpose of highlighting language characteristics and expressing Singapore’s culture.
