Leveraging the Van der Waals forces and the unique structure of gecko setae, this project aims to enhance the adhesive capabilities of polymers through ultrasonic embossing. The primary objective is to refine the uniformity and size of polymer nanostructures, focusing on the use of commercially available Polycarbonate and Silicone Rubber due to their distinct mechanical properties. This project includes a detailed examination of the embossing process parameters and their impact on nanostructure formation and adhesion. Key experimental methods involve the ultrasonic embossing of nanostructures, followed by Scanning Electron Microscopy for structural analysis and adhesive testing to assess performance against theoretical expectations. Initial results indicate promising enhancements in Polycarbonate’s nanostructure uniformity and adhesion characteristics, while Silicon Rubber’s results suggest the need for further optimization. This project contributes to the advancement of gecko-inspired adhesives with potential applications in robotics and other fields requiring reusable and strong adhesion.
