In recent years, as global environmental issues intensified, ecological civilisation has gradually become a focal topic in the Chinese society. As an important part of popular culture, variety shows have also begun to take on the role of spreading the concept of ecological civilisation. This paper analyses the performance of Chinese ecological variety shows in recent years from the perspective of ecological utopia, drawing on Xi Jinping's thoughts on ecological civilisation. This paper will focus on programs such as Back to Field, The Great Challenge, and Keep Running: Nature Season. Through content analysis, this paper explores how these shows, while presenting idealised ecological environments, convey environmental protection concepts and evaluates their role in raising viewers' environmental awareness. Although these ecological variety shows are entertaining and have a certain educational value, the ecological environments they depict are often idealised, creating a certain distance from real-world ecological issues. This, to some extent, weakens the educational effectiveness of the shows, revealing limitations in the ability to promote the concept of ecological civilisation.
